The infrastructure is not going anywhere. The interface to it is changing faster than at any point in the last thirty years.

The earlier posts in this series covered what does not work – generic RAG on source code, tools that ignore the execution graph, AI that cannot recover institutional knowledge. This post looks forward.
Where does mainframe fit in a world where AI is transforming every layer of the software stack? What stays the same? What changes? And what does this mean for the people who work with these systems?
After 35 years in mainframe, I have watched the industry absorb the client-server revolution, the internet, the cloud, and the mobile era. Each one was predicted to end the mainframe. None of them did. AI will be no different – not because mainframe is immune to change, but because the reasons organisations run it are not going away.
The IBM z/OS mainframe will still be running the world's critical financial, government, and insurance infrastructure in 2035. This is not a hopeful prediction – it is a structural reality.
The organisations that run mainframe do so because they cannot afford the failure modes of alternatives. A major bank's mainframe processes millions of transactions per day with availability requirements that no distributed system has reliably matched at scale. Moving away from that is a multi-decade project that starts before the benefits appear and whose risks are borne by people who will not be around to claim the credit.
The economics reinforce this. The cost of running a workload on z/OS at scale is competitive with cloud alternatives once the full cost of the cloud infrastructure, the migration, the re-skilling, and the ongoing management is accounted for.
The regulatory environment reinforces it further. Data sovereignty requirements, financial regulation, and security certification regimes have added friction to migration that was not present a decade ago.
The mainframe is not in decline. It is in a slower evolution than the rest of the industry – which is exactly what the organisations running critical infrastructure require.
AI-assisted operations. The first wave of genuine AI value on mainframe is already arriving in operations. AI-assisted abend diagnosis, performance anomaly detection, predictive alerting based on pattern recognition in SMF data – these tools are reducing the cognitive load on experienced systems programmers and making the knowledge of experienced professionals more scalable.
Natural language interfaces. The next generation of mainframe tooling will include natural language interfaces to z/OS operations. Rather than memorising operator commands, a new generation of operations staff will ask in natural language and have AI translate the intent into correct z/OS commands. This does not eliminate the need for experienced professionals who understand what the commands do and can verify that the AI's translation is correct. It does lower the barrier to entry for routine operations tasks.
Automated diagnostics. The progression from AI-assisted to AI-automated diagnostics is already beginning. For specific, well-defined failure modes – space abends, known data exception patterns from specific data sources, recurring performance issues with known root causes – AI systems are beginning to handle the full diagnostic cycle and generate change recommendations without requiring a human to initiate the analysis. The human remains in the loop for approval and for novel failure modes.
Mainframe as AI data source. The data held in mainframe systems is increasingly valuable as training data for domain-specific AI models. Financial institutions are beginning to build data pipelines from DB2 z/OS and VSAM to AI training infrastructure. This creates new work at the intersection of mainframe and modern data engineering.
Using AI tools in daily work. The efficiency gains from using AI assistants for routine documentation, code explanation, test case generation, and initial diagnostic analysis are real. Professionals who learn to use these tools effectively will be more productive than those who do not. This does not require deep AI expertise. It requires practical familiarity with what the tools are good at, what they are unreliable at, and how to verify their output.
Understanding AI limitations on mainframe. As this series has described, generic AI tools have specific failure modes on mainframe. Professionals who understand why these tools fail – the execution graph problem, the copybook problem, the institutional knowledge problem – are better positioned to evaluate tools, catch AI errors before they reach production, and advise their organisations on what to adopt and what to avoid.
Bridging mainframe and modern infrastructure. The most valuable skill combination in the coming decade will be deep mainframe knowledge combined with enough modern infrastructure knowledge to build the bridges. DB2 z/OS and Kafka. COBOL and REST APIs. SMF data and modern analytics platforms. JCL and cloud orchestration. You do not need to be an expert in both. You need to be competent enough in modern infrastructure to collaborate with the teams building it, and deep enough in mainframe to ensure the bridge is built correctly.
Mainframe data engineer for AI pipelines. Organisations building AI models on mainframe data need someone who understands both worlds. This is a new role that does not yet have a standard title or career path, but the demand is clear and growing.
AI-assisted systems programmer. The systems programmer of 2030 will spend less time on routine monitoring and more time reviewing AI recommendations, handling novel failure modes that AI cannot pattern-match, and setting the policies that govern AI-automated operations. The expertise requirement increases, not decreases.
Mainframe AI evaluator. Organisations adopting AI tools for mainframe operations, diagnostics, and modernisation need someone who can evaluate these tools critically – not a generic AI evaluator, but someone with deep mainframe expertise who can assess whether a tool actually understands z/OS architecture or is applying generic patterns to a specialised domain.
AI is lowering the barrier to entry for some mainframe tasks. Natural language interfaces, AI-assisted JCL debugging, AI documentation tools – these make it easier for a developer who is new to mainframe to get started. This is good for the field, which has a talent pipeline problem.
At the same time, AI is increasing the value of deep mainframe expertise. The professionals who can evaluate AI tools critically, who understand the execution graph that generic tools miss, who hold the institutional knowledge that AI cannot recover – these people become more valuable, not less, in an AI-first world.
They are the ones who understand their platform well enough to know when AI is right and when it is wrong – and who have the credibility and the communication skills to act on that judgment.
That combination – deep mainframe expertise, practical AI literacy, and the ability to bridge both worlds – is rare, in demand, and becoming more valuable every year.
AI writes the code. Mainframe professionals make it run.
This was the premise of the first post in this series, and it remains true at the end. The nature of what "making it run" means is changing – less routine monitoring, more AI-assisted diagnosis, new roles at the intersection of mainframe and modern infrastructure.
But the fundamental value of someone who understands z/OS at a deep level – who knows what the execution graph looks like, who holds the institutional knowledge the code does not contain, who can read a dump and know within thirty seconds what happened – that value is not declining.
The mainframe community has survived the client-server revolution, the internet, the cloud, and the mobile era. It will find its place in the AI era too – not by pretending nothing is changing, but by bringing its deep expertise to bear on the new tools and the new challenges that come with them.
